Hi Birding Ausers,
Went back to Gold Creek on Friday and added Grey Goshawk (being mobbed by a
pair of Spangled Drongos), Crested Shrike-Tit, Little Shrike-thrush,
Mistletoebird, Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove (heard) and Striated Pardalote. Didn't
see the Barred Cuckoo-shrikes.
Went to Dayboro yesterday to Lacey's Creek. Great views of another Grey
Goshawk, Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove, Pacific Baza, Grey-crowned Babbler and Azure
Kingfisher.
On the way to Dayboro we called in at the wetlands below the Gateway Bridge.
The place was stuffed full of birds, including a mixed breeding colony with
large numbers of Cattle Egret and Plumed Egret, plus a few Little Egret and 2
pairs of Royal Spoonbill. Well worth a look.
On the way home we called in at the Samford Cemetary and saw a Helmeted Guinea
Fowl strutting round the grave stones - an escapee from one of the local hobby
farms, I'm sure.
This sighting got me thinking of the large group (20+ birds) of HGFs my son and
I saw 5ks out of Blackall in Queensland in September this year. They were
foraging alongside the road and crossed over in front of us and headed off into
the bush. It is not my intention to reignite the debate about whether to tick
or not, but I wonder if this could be an established feral population? Has
anyone else seen these birds?
