Hi all

Just a reminder that the pelagic trip scheduled from St Helens for 29th December 2007 is confirmed. We will be visiting deep sea canyons and sea mounts where food and nutrients are brought to the surface in upwelling currents that attract many pelagic birds. These are reliable places to find all the regulars including gadfly petrels, prions, storm petrels. Westland Petrel, both Royals, Sooty and Light mantled Sooty Albatross are sighted here and any of the southern exotics could turn up. And it is only one hour from sheltered waters.

We have chartered the substantial 60' ocean going charter vessel Nifty II. Cost of day the trip is $100 per person departing St Helens wharf at 06.30 am and returning 15.00 hrs. The area is also in the vicinity of the recently dedicated NE Tasmania Marine Protected Area (MPA). It will be particularly interesting in that not much is known about the summer populations of pelagic birds off NE Tasmania. Fishing industry sources inform me that presently bird numbers are greater than usual for this time of year.

We are also planning regular trips from May until August 2008. The 2008 scheduled dates of the birding pelagics are;

May            2008    Thursday 15th, Friday 16th, Saturday 17th; Confirmed

June            2008    Thursday 19, Friday 20th, Saturday 21st  Confirmed:

July 2008 Thursday 24th, Friday 24th, Saturday 25th, Confirmed

August 2008 Thursday 21st, Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd, (Tentative, need more numbers for this one to proceed)

There are vacancies on all dates shown. Please contact me if you are interested in any of the above or require any further info.

Regards and good birding
