I've heard of people resorting to projecting their slides onto a screen and 
photographing them with a high resolution digital camera on a tripod.

I was under the impression that this was not just a cheap way around it, but 
was done in order to get good results, perhaps at a reasonable price. I can try 
to find out some details if you want.
