The following is a message from Trevor Ford who saw the Painted Snipe today.
Hi Roy,
Many thanks - great directions - they were the first birds I put my bins on!
Cove Road is an area I go to about every 6 months or so, and always reckon
it looks promising. I've seen some good birds out there but not as good as
Painted Snipe. (Although I did have my only SEQ Red Goshawk fly over the
main road several years ago.)
You might want to send another message to birding-aus, updating the
situation. I'll leave it up to you.
Anyway, I saw the birds exactly where you said they'd be, between 3pm and
3.30pm this afternoon. This time there were four birds - 2 males and 2
females. Also good for local birders were 6 Cotton Pygmy Geese and 4 Great
Crested Grebes (between that dam and the one a little further on). Glossy
Ibis and White-necked Heron were also present but I didn't see any
Yellow-billed Spoonbills.
Cheers - Trevor
If birders are going to the area remember that they are on private property
so do not leave the road. Trevor and I (plus Robyn Howard yesterday) all saw
them easily from Cove Road.
Good birding!!
