Hi Everyone,
Two frigatebirds flew over the Noosa estuary yesterday as I was carrying
out a shorebird survey. Unfortunately I was preoccupied with survey
obligations, and couldn't spend long looking at them. I hadn't seen
frigatebirds for years, and all I could think was "memorise the
underside pattern", which brought me to believe they were female Greater
Frigatebirds when I consulted the field guide at the end of the day.
I have no idea if they are still there, but it might be worth looking
and confirming my ID, or else changing it. Noosa's an hour away for me,
so I'm not going back to check.
We also watched a shark in its dying hour. Those who know identified it
as a bronze whaler, about eight feet long (interesting that I still
estimate measurement in feet). It had several wounds, which appeared to
be teeth marks from another shark or similarly-fanged animal. It was not
nice to watch the animal as death approached, but some of the humans
nearby regarded it as mere entertainment as they strolled from their
boat drinking their beers. We're all different.
Cheers,
Jill
