Thanks to Steve, Nikolas, Chris and Dave for their thoughtful and 
helpful replies. As there are a few digital field guides out there now, 
there will probably be more in due course. I figure if the music 
industry can cope with survival in the era of internet and computer 
piracy, then the book publishing industry might do so also.
 I note that some come in the form of a database which can be 
interrogated. That's fine on the one hand, but I think I, personally, 
would prefer to buy a more straightforward format (similar to an online 
computer manual in .pdf format) so you can browse it.
