Hi all

The weekend of September 22 & 23 will see the running of the first Northern Beaches Fairy-wren Survey. The idea of the survey is to work on community awareness and yield some data on a couple of prominent understorey species. This may help to indicate the health of the parks and reserves of the northern beaches, particularly since we'll be mapping locations of the fairy-wrens as part of the survey.

This year is somewhat of a pilot project and will help us to refine the process and structure for future years. I will be looking for as many as four experienced and enthusiastic birders - hopefully with tour leading skills too - who would be willing to help out as team leaders on the survey. All training for the process will be given. Naturally we're also looking for enthusiastic participants who wish to come along and celebrate Spring, our bush reserves and the birdlife of the area. It's a voluntary project from top to bottom.

There will be a presentation on fairy-wrens and the survey at 7:00 pm on Friday September 21 at the Coastal Environment Centre, North Narrabeen. All are welcome, including those who aren't participating in the survey.

The survey will be conducted at six sites: three on Saturday the 22nd and three on Sunday the 23rd. The sites give us a reasonable spread of habitats and distribution across the northern beaches area. They are McKay Reserve (Palm Beach), Billarong Reserve (North Narrabeen), Chiltern Trail (Ingleside), Attunga Reserve (Newport), Warriewood Wetlands (Warriewood) and Bangalley (Avalon). Positions on teams will be limited based upon the trails and vegetation. It is hoped that in future years the survey will cover a great deal more locations so that we get a more complete picture for the entire locality. Surveys will commence at 8:00 am and should be completed by 9:30 am at all sites. Following the surveys, there wil be picnic brunches on the grounds in front of the Coastal Environment Centre. Full results will be posted on the website at http://www.redtail.net.au/fairy-wrens.

Apart from presence and absence, the survey will help us to capture data on family sizes, habitat use by each species and distribution of each species. Future surveys may also work on demographics such as family structure.

On the community/conservation level it is hoped that the weekend will get the community involved in conservation works, give the community a little more feeling of ownership of their reserves and to showcase the council reserves and their values to more people.

More information can be found on the website: http:// www.redtail.net.au/fairy-wrens or you can email me if you'd like a copy of the info flyer. If anyone on Birding-Aus would be willing to volunteer their services as Team Leaders, please contact me on the phone number below or email me at Your help and enthusiasm would be greatly appreciated. Those on the list who might wish to participate in the survey teams can register online at http:// www.redtail.net.au/fairy-wrens or contact the Coastal Environment Centre on 02 9970 6905. Book early as places on teams are limited.

I look forward to seeing you all somewhere on a northern beaches reserve on September 22 and 23.

Happy birding
