Grim indeed. I assume by "renewable and sustainable", he means we can plant new trees then knock them down again. As for him seeing his role as supporting the forestry industry rather than the the forests themselves, it probably comes down to the fact that the forests don't vote.................

Or am I just being cynical?

Some very disheartening news from the federal Forestry Minister, who clearly sees his role as supporting the "forestry industry" rather than the forests themselves. My concern is that Abetz believes that logging native forests is "a renewable and sustainable pursuit". Grim news.

But Senator Abetz says that still will not be able to satisfy the domestic demand for things like floorboards and furniture.

"Clearly the plantation sector has to do a lot more in that regard, and as a result there will be the reliance on our native forests for some time to come, and that of course is a renewable and sustainable pursuit," he said.
