Some very disheartening news from the federal Forestry Minister, who clearly sees his role as supporting the "forestry industry" rather than the forests themselves. My concern is that Abetz believes that logging native forests is "a renewable and sustainable pursuit". Grim news.

Abetz flags 40-year demand for hardwood

Posted 57 minutes ago

Federal Forestry Minister Eric Abetz says a new report shows Australia will need to log native forests for the next 40 years to satisfy demand for hardwood.

The Bureau of Rural Sciences report predicts there will be a five- fold increase in hardwood plantations like eucalypts by 2030.

But Senator Abetz says that still will not be able to satisfy the domestic demand for things like floorboards and furniture.

"Clearly the plantation sector has to do a lot more in that regard, and as a result there will be the reliance on our native forests for some time to come, and that of course is a renewable and sustainable pursuit," he said.
