Hi David,

I asked Walter Boles about the albatross taxonomy a few months back and he said that the genetic differences between the subspecies/races were not sufficient for them to be separated out as species and presumaby this will mean that the revised Christidis and Boles (out in November) will retain the current taxonomy.

It is important, however, to note the subspecies when recording sightings as the conservation status of the distinct taxa differs. Most, but not all taxa, can be distinguished in the field.
