Yesterday afternoon (14th June 2007), Stuart Pickering, David Mitford and I
spent a few hours sea watching from Magic Pt Maroubra. During the afternoon,
winds were mainly light south-westerly producing fairly calm conditions and
little swell inshore.

During the afternoon, there were thousands of Fluttering Shearwaters making
there way south in loose flocks. There was also hundreds of Silver Gulls
also feeding a few km offshore but not much other sea birds feeding in with
them.

Also seen that afternoon was one of the resident adult Peregrine Falcons
flying very close and past Magic Point, an Eastern Reef Egret and an Eastern
Curlew heading south (the later maybe an early return!).

There were also several Hump-backed Whales making their way north with a few
fairly close to shore.

Our list and numbers of sea birds recorded that afternoon (within the time
period 1230 to 1700) included:

Fairy Penguin (heard)

Black-browed Albatross (50)

Yellow-nosed Albatross (9)

Shy Albatross (1-2)

Wandering Albatross (3)

Southern Giant Petrel (1)

Giant Petrel species (2)

Little Pied Cormorant (3)

Brown Skua (2)

Kelp Gull (2 adult & a juv.)

Silver Gull (500)

Until next time
