Hi Ian,
I am stoked to see you also have seen Cape Barren Goose at Price. I saw 4
there last year (30/06/06) and reported them on birdpedia.com.au.
Interestingly I received a couple of queries back to check if I was sure, as
apparently according to the bird atlas, they would have been out of range?
I am the first to admit to not having much experience with waders and have
difficulty with Knots etc but a Cape Barren Goose I think I can identify
with some confidence…….
Cheers

g'Day all
Arrived home at Price SA from St Helens Tas. on Saturday afternoon and
visited the saltworks late yesterday. Surprising numbers of waders were
moving in from from the exposed tidal flats of St Vincent Gulf as an
extensive line squall with embedded rain storms approached from the South
West .
Eastern Curlew 4, Whimbrel 4 (8), Bar-tailed Godwit 12 (22), Greenshank 50+,
also 30+ knots from distance into sun with rain, unable to identify spp.
Also RN Stints in small numbers. Also of interest were good numbers of Fairy
Tern 60 (100) and one Cape Barren Goose. Last June a single bird was seen on
the tidal flats at Port Vincent 30 Nm. SSW of Price and also one is
occasionally seen at Cape Elizabeth, 29 Nm. WNW of Price on Spencer Gulf
Although there were Red-necked Avocet 60 (100) present, Banded Stilts are
absent. Only one, a fully coloured bird was seen with a flock of 20+
Black-winged Stlits. Absence of the usual large numbers of Banded Stilt here
probably indicate the population has headed north for a breeding event. Has
anybody had a look at Lake Torrens or Lake Callabonna or perhaps Lake Grace
WA since the recent rain?
Regards
Ian May
