It was an appropriately cold morning for the first of winter here in
Katoomba, but that never seems to bother the birds. On this morning's
walk a Rockwarbler on the first of the Three Sisters was a cheerful
start to winter, while Crescent Honeyeaters shouted their "e-gypt"
call without the "e" (as they do), making it simply "gypt!" or
perhaps it was "jik".
Earlier in the week, a short walk in the bush below my house in an
area known as The Gully yielded 34 species including a Rose Robin
giving its soft winter call and an Eastern Whipbird poking about in
some loose bark. Mixed feeding flocks are the norm at this time of
year so any birding walk is characterised by periods of quiet
alternating with frenetic activity. On the other hand, right now some
species seem as if they're at least thinking about nesting. A pair of
Spotted Pardalotes were down near the ground showing undue attention
to an area of embankment, Red-browed Finches were carrying long grass
stems (possibly just for a roost nest), and a pair of Yellow-tailed
Black-Cockatoos had glints in their eyes.
Cheers,
Carol
