A nice weekend weather-wise to get away to East Gippsland. Specifically
near Bairnsdale (Sarsfield and Nyerimilang Heritage Park).

Gippsland, unlike much of northern Victoria, is looking very green after
some good summer storms.

Birding highlights were as follows:

1. Sarsfield
- Satin Bowerbird - many females and immatures plus a single adult male
dancing at his bower and sorting flowers etc
- Lewin's Honeyeater - a new bird for this area. The machine-gun like
call is characteristic
- A single Collared Sparrowhawk chasing off a Brown Goshawk (!)

2. Nyerimilang Heritage Park
This Parks Victoria managed location is just west of Lakes Entrance. The
area has a number of different habitats from coast to scrubs and saltmarsh
backing onto coastal banksia communities. The highlight here was
definitely a pair of adult White-bellied Sea-Eagles honking loudly to each
other while they perched atop a very high dead tree overlooking the
Gippsland Lakes. Also at this location one can see by far the largest
Kurrajong trees on crown land in Victoria. Well worth a visit if you're
passing by.

3. Fairy Dell
This flora reserve is close to Bruthen (north of Bairnsdale). It is a
small patch of rainforest with some superb vines, Lilly Pilly and other
wet forest plants. As expected we heard rather than saw most birds
recorded. Highlights were
- Wonga Pigeon, a wonderful grey and white pigeon with a characteristic
call

- Lewin's Honeyeater, this is a reliable location for the species near
Bairnsdale

- Brown Gerygone, a thornbill-like bird of the wetter forests in south
east coastal Victoria.

Now, a few atlas sheets to submit ...

a. Link to information about Bruthen (including Fairy Dell) -

b. Link to Nyerimilang HP Visitors Guide etc -
