Hello birders.
I'm passing on a message from Dale Tonkinson who's holidaying in
Queensland at the moment. He briefly saw a medium-large gull of the
general colouration of the Pacific Gull type (including black
subterminal band) at Wynnum today. He says that the bird is unusual
because of its size and relatively slender bill (with at least some
yellow - not as bright as for an adult Pacific or even Kelp Gull). As
someone who is experienced in Pacific and Kelp Gulls in his home state
of Victoria and having some Asian birding experience, Dale is certain
that this gull is something unusual. Any detail such as a dark tipped
or banded bill, white windows in the primaries or extent of dark
underwing markings was not apparent with the brief view. My guess is
Black-tailed Gull, so if anyone's keen on checking out this sighting,
the bird was seen flying along the coast at the start of the ebb tide
immediately offshore from the Bowling Club. Pity I'm in Melbourne!
