Hi All,
Went to Smith's Lake this morning to see the rails, but dipped out although
some sounds in the longish grass probably belonged to the rails.
What was interesting however was a female Red-capped Robin actively feeding
(including opening its wings) in the NE section of the lake surrounds. Although
these robins are known to move to the plain in summer and autumn, such
sightings are becoming less frequent due to the development along the coastal
plain. As the lake is less than 5kms away from the Perth CBD, it is good to
know that such an uncommon bird around Perth can still be seen.
Besides others, the lake also had a Yellow-billed Spoonbill and a wandering
flock of 25 plus Silvereyes.
As a long time resident of Perth who had never heard of this lake, it was a
delight to spend some time there.
