I have seen a buff banded rail running about the undergrowth (on two
different occassions) near Mrs Macquaries Chair, which is right next
to the royal botanic garden in the Sydney CBD (between the city and
Woolloomooloo).
The first time it was close to the botanic garden, in some
undergrowth in a garden bed. I got a good look and a positive
identification by stalking it around the garden bed a bit. The next
time was along side the stairs that run off the bottom end of Cowper
Wharf rd, up to the land bridge that goes over the Eastern
Distributor. There were some grasses and vegetation planted there
next to the stairs to stabilise the hill-face and it was rustling
around in that. When it noticed me observing it from the stairs
(distance about 2 metres) it went deeper into the grasses and I lost
sight of it.
This was about about 4 years ago before I moved from Sydney to
Brisbane, I lived in Potts Pt and walked into the CBD every morning
for work. I only saw the rail in the grass there the one time.
Never seen one in the open though.

them one day last year. I was driving in Rocklea, an industrial
suburb to the west, and stopped at traffic lights on an extremely
busy road - lots of heavy trucks and semis. Whilst some lanes of
traffic were stopped, with others still moving, out came a Buff-
banded Rail and calmly pecked amongst the blue metal gravel well

There is actually a creek which floods (if it were ever to rain
again) within about two hundred metres. I wondered what it might
be finding to eat, and could only come up with the possibility of
dead insects having fallen off cars the previous night.
It is amazing how some creatures continue to make a living in
suburban habitat.
