to perpetuate the "myth" of lyrebirds mimcking human-made sounds ...
a couple of years back, my wife and i stood spellbound listening to a lyrebird
not 5m away run through a medley of bird calls interspersed with a very
unnatural sound remarkably like someone hammering a downpipe or sheet of metal.
this was much louder than the mimicked calls.
it repeated the sequence a few times.
this was at kelly's falls near helensburgh on the fringes of the Royal NP south
of sydney.
just a short distance away over the fence was, unfortunately, a new housing
estate still in the building stage.
i'm no expert but draw your own conclusions.
near queen mary falls up here in qld, i have also listened to a few very
elusive alberts at frustratingly close quarters for extended periods and not
picked any obvious mimicry of birds or anything else, but unearthly sounds all
the same.
nb omission of capital letters etc is deliberate.
