Ground cuckoo-shrikes

I went out to the Baradine (NSW) area over Easter, camping with 30 or so
Hunter BOC members in a part of the Pillaga Scrub. Great weather, great
times had by all, and we found ~75 species within walking distance of
the campsite (which was at Odells Crossing, for those of you who know
the area). The area we went to was not affected by last year's
bushfires but the impact from the drought was notable, and most species
were present in low numbers only.

The Baradine community has developed some birding routes, with a
brochure available (including copies are at the tourist information
office in Coonabarabran) and so we drove around some of them. Highlight
was to find a group of 5 Ground Cuckoo-shrike feeding together in
stubble in a paddock. I had saturation views of a bird I haven't seen
for quite a long time - very satisfying. For anyone who lives out that
way or is heading that way, the birds were along Kinross Rd, about 500m
before the T intersection to Munns Rd. These roads are shown on the
Baradine birding routes brochure.
