A laugh needed

Well yes I guess I was being "crotchetty", and was unfairly harsh on Denise.

To be honest I was upset to see a slight reworking of a right-wing political parable, which teaches a 'lesson' that environmental protections are an infringement of the rights of the individual, posted so soon after the discussion requesting Lorne to cease his overtly political postings.

I'm sure that most list members would have picked up on the dog- whistle politics being invoked: the "inner-city elite" environmentalist ("designer shorts" are the signifier here) who wants to ban horses from National Parks (thus assaulting the rights of iconic "men from snowy river" to ride where they see fit) being so out of touch with her environment that she is injured fleeing an aggrieved spotted owl/tawny frogmouth (although in some variants it's possum). And that organisations like National Parks and Wildlife, the EPA, etc actively encroach on our freedom to act as we wish.

The "joke" has been used by those who seek untrammeled access to natural environments - hunters, 4 wheel drivers, loggers etc - to mock and belittle the work of environmentalists, and the government bodies which work to manage and protect our natural resources.

I'd hope that isn't message that birders interested in the protection and conservation of birds would subscribe to?

fwiw this is a version of the "joke" from mid 2005:
