Reckon its a Sanderling. White wing bar is broader than a red-necked stint's
and the bill looks a little too long. This also fits better with the habitat
as Sanderlings tend to favour surf beaches.

neckedstint? Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2007 22:26:52 -0700 (PDT)

Hello

We took a trip to Phillip Island (Vic) on Sunday 25/3.
At one of the surf beaches (Forrest Caves)
I came across a small bird fossicking in the shallows.
It was alone - the only other birds
I observed whilst there were Pacific Gulls (adults and
immature). The small bird was not at all concerned
with the close presence of the Gulls and in fact I
managed to get quite close views. But being a novice
(and particularly where waders are concerned) I had no
idea what it was.

When I got home I searched the net and asked around -
some other people suggested it may be a Red Necked
Stint (non breeding plumage? etc). A couple of other
people have since suggested Sanderling because of the
whiter plumage and shape of the beak.
