Recent emails about late breeding for King Parrots led me think to post
this -
Last Sunday afternoon 11/3 I was at Gum Swamp, outside Forbes NSW (after
the ABSA meeting on Saturday which was very good, thanks to the
organisers). I saw a Sacred Kingfisher feeding two young which were very
demanding and following it closely wherever it went. The dusk was
gathering and I had the impression that the birds weren't going to be
going to bed with full tummies, the adult was running out of light for
hunting and was having trouble keeping up the food to them. I could also
hear the sound of what i thought was a third young calling further away,
altho I couldn't locate it to confirm that it was. I only saw the one
adult at a time feeding the two young that were hanging together, and I
had the impression that it was the same adult - going by the ruffled and
slightly ratty looking plumage.
I thought this quite late for Sacred Kingfishers to still be feeding
young - what do others think? I thought that they would be getting ready
to fly north by now normally. Would this be a second brood possibly, or
a late brood after an unsuccessful first one? Or perhaps it's normal?
I'd be interested to know what others have found.
thanks
