Two other excellent (textbook) references for learning about osmoregulation
in birds are:
Skadhauge, E. (1981). Osmoregulation in Birds (Springer-Verlag, Berlin)
Bradshaw, S.D. (2003). Vertebrate Ecophysiology: An Introduction to its
Principles and Applications (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK).
Both books discuss the techniques involved in studying water and electrolyte
(e.g. salt) balance in terrestrial and marine birds but, most importantly,
give examples of how some Australian birds cope in arid and semi-arid
situations. Skadhauge (1981) use the Galah and Zebra Finch as case studies,
whereas Bradshaw (2003) refers to other Australian species such as the
Silvereye, Spinifex Pigeon, White-browed Scrubwren, Spinifexbird,
Budgerigar, Port Lincoln Ringneck and chat species. Both authors also cite
work on a range of overseas species.
