Scientists have developed a new technique for species identification in the
form of a DNA barcode. See
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2007-02/ru-nbb021207.php
The paper can be accessed at http://www.barcodeoflife.org/barcode/batsbirds/
The interesting point here is that 14 pairs of North American bird species
with separate identities are in fact DNA twins and no less than 8 gull
species are virtually DNA identical. It also goes the other way. Unique DNA
barcodes from provisional new bird species were obtained from a number of
look-alike specimens. This barcoding could have implications in the future
on species listings.
