Late last year I banded a number of young Pied Oystercatchers between Ballina
and Red Rock, North Coast New South Wales. A numbered metal band was placed on
the right tibia (above the joint) and an alpha numeric yellow flag was placed
on the left tibia. The flags have combinations of letters and numbers a such
as A2, B6, C9.
A Pied Oystercatcher with a yellow flag on its left tibia was recently observed
at Port Stephens. Unfortunately the letter and number were not noted so the
individual bird could not be identified. However it is still a valuable record.
This note is to alert birdwatchers who may observe a flagged Pied Oystercatcher
to check the flag for a letter and number. This will increase the value of any
report. It is also important to note which leg the flag is on as a yellow flag
has been placed on the right tibia of Pied Oystercatchers banded in Victoria.
