I've recorded Arctic Jaeger a few times in the Geelong region. All of my sightings have been near the northern end of Corio Bay, such as near the Shell Refinery and even in Limeburner's Lagoon (this is where Hovell's Creek joins the bay, upstream of the Corio Bay Yacht Club - and nowhere near Limeburners Point, which is on the other side of the bay, near Eastern Gardens - confusing!). The fact that I've seen them at the northern end is due to the fact that I live near there and drive to and from work along that part of the bay. I probably should have taken more notice of weather conditions so I can't help about Nathan's comment.

Arctics are more usually found in bays than the other Jaegers, at least in this part of the world. I'm always interested to see them, but have never really considered them as particularly unusual. A Pom or Long-tailed on my "seen from the kitchen window" list would be good though!

Hi,

Whilst at Eastern Beach (Geelong, Vic) on Saturday on a boat i saw a Jaeger
species it was too slim to be a Pomarine.
It was totally dark brown, casing a crested tern, it was slightly bigger in appearance and significantly more bulky around the chest and in the width of the wings. No tail streamer was present, it had a wedge shaped tail, a small
dark bill.

A little surprised to see it inside the Bay, although the wind would have
helped things along.

Also saw thousands of short tailed shearwaters flying east past Cape Schanck
on sunday along with 6 shy albatross.
