Over the last week, I have had 5 trips to the shelf marlin fishing. The water
has warmed considerably, with lots of bait schools present, attracting
thousands of wedge tailed shearwaters and a few other surprises. So far there
hasn't been a single day without seeing at least one Wandering Albatross.
Great winged petrels are becoming quite common, with 40 odd seen on Tuesday.
There are still a few Sooty terns around and I saw a single unidentified storm
petrel from a distance. Fleshy footed SWs are seen every day (40 - 50 msot
days) and I also saw a Gould's Petrel on two separate days. Most days I see a
couple of shearwaters with light coloured underwings, although my inexperience
with them leaves them unidentified. Usually they are seen fron a hundred
metres or more and I cannot confidently separate them between little or
fluttering. Maybe someone could give me some tips. Also of interest are the
numbers of dolphins seen every day - these creatures have got the best
life and always come over to inspect the boat and show off like they are in
Sea World!!
