Dear Birding-ausers,

Just a quick note to advise that I have now heard back from the organisers of the 30th Society of Ethnobiology Congress to be held at the University of California at Berkeley (March 28-31) following my enquiry about the possibility of holding a symposium dedicated to Ethnoornithology ... for more information see the Congress website at: http://ethnobiology.org/

As of this writing (9th January 2007) we have two presenters - myself, Robert Gosford and Ms. Mercy Njeri of Kenya. I propose that we be modest and look for another 4 or 5 15-20 minute presenters and run in one room on an afternoon. If we get more than that I'll either have to seek a larger timeslot or be ruthless ...

A draft program for the symposium might look like the following -

Introduction/overview: Eugene Hunn?/Eugene Anderson/other?

Presentation 1: Robert Gosford - The Stormbird, an Aboriginal cult in northern Australia

Presentation 2: Mercy Njeri - Masaai bird use and conservation (TBC)

Presentation 3: etc through to

Presentation 6 or more?

Conclusion, panel discussion?

I note that there is a proposal for a book on ethnoornithology essays following the conduct of a similar symposium at the International Ornithological Congress at Hamburg in August 2006. It may be that some of the contributors to the proposed symposium may be interested in contributing to that project or vice versa - that participants from Hamburg may be interested in coming to Berkeley.

Let me know your thoughts asap - Qantas has some specials for flights out of Australia to the east coast of the USA and San Francisco is a relatively easy city to access generally (as opposed to Blenheim, Chaing Rai etc ...).

I'm looking forward to your early responses - deadline for paper presentations, and thus this symposium is 25 January, so sooner rather than later is better!

I'll post this to the Ethnoornithology Research & Study Group website at: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/ethnoornithology/ and invite you to pass this on elsewhere if you think it appropriate.
