I think, though, escaped fowl do often hang around with Brush Turkeys
(for safety?). I saw a Guineafowl accompanying a BT on Mt Whiteney
above Cairns on a couple of occasions in the mid 90s.

Well, it was on. I was heavily edited (I expected no less) and so looked as

BTW. I just checked Slibley and Alquist and they place Chickens and Brush
Turkeys in different Orders, from DNA, and point to 100 myr for the split!
(dog - cow hybrid?). The mound builders are related to North American Guans
and it is obviously a very ancient split indeed.

I have been told that the Chinese use Black Chickens for Medicine.

About three weeks ago I received a report that a Brush Turkey / Chicken
hybrid has been reported in Ashgrove. It was a haunting a Brush Turkey
mound
and generally in company with one.

I went over and photographed the bird and studied the pictures at leisure.
I
determined that the bird was a melanistic chicken, not an hybrid, reported
this to the original reporter and dropped the matter.

This morning I received a phone call from Channel 10, apparently
pilgrimages
are being made to the site. I gave a long interview to a reporter,
explaining why I believed that it was not an hybrid but a chook, and
showed
  them the bird.

If it is a slow news day I should be on after 5 today on Channel 10. You
can
  watch it for a laugh.

The photo of the bird is on the Birds Queensland Web Site
  http://www.birdsqueensland.org.au/

  Another (larger) photo is on
  http://www.flickr.com/photos/tim_murphy/327884671/

  Opinions welcome. Am I wrong?

  Tim Murphy

PS. For Reoez - sorry - no mention of Peak Oil.
