Thanks to all who replied confirming my bird was indeed a Dusky Moorhen. I
was totally confused by the apparent purple sheen of the feathers. I see
dozens of Dusky Moorhens here in Penrith every day and they are a dull
grey-black in shade (see this picture), it must have just been a trick of
light down there in Victoria.
