Hello Jill, some thoughts for you.

1. Maps
Try and obtain some good topographic maps of the area. viz. 1: 100 000
(1cm = 1km) topographic maps 'Bogong' and 'Buffalo'

1: 25 000 maps (4cm = 1km)
'Mt Beauty' for the area around Mt Beauty. 'Bright' and 'Eurobin' for the
Bright area.

Other maps
There are some good 4WD maps out - check the city or suburban mapshops or
check the following link for maps

2. Locations (early morning best for birding)
Here's a few areas and localities worth trying
- Mt Beauty Pondage for waterbirds
- Simmonds Creek Rd. se of Mt Beauty
- Clover Dam and Lake Guy near Bogong township,
- the High Plains at Falls Creek eg. Langford West Aqueduct track.

Caravan Parks on the rivers can be good and bush tracks around towns are
worth trying eg. the Mountain Bike course and associated trails above
(south of) Mt Beauty.

Be aware that many bush tracks may not be signposted or named on the
ground so care is needed.

I've found that riding a bike along quiet backroads can be a great way to
find birds. Alternatively driving carefully with the windows down can be
good in suitable habitats.

3. Atlassing your data
Be sure to send copies of your observations to the Atlas of Victorian
Wildlife. I can advise on this after your trip.

cheers, Martin
