thanks to everyone who replied
at the risk of generalising, the replies were very thoughtful and fair,
generally speaking, except of course that one person's off-list missive
berating me for using lower case in emails (the horror!) among other gripes.
i'm the first to admit that our media's standards of research and fact checking
are often not what they should be, deadlines or not.
but birding is a highly specialised pursuit, even at the amateur level, and
birders should keep that in mind whenever communicating with the press and/or
general public.

fyi subeditors never make mistakes, just "production errors"!
and we never miss media watch.

now back to the birds ...

Newsflash! Television news editor makes mistake!

Like most of us, on some days I make the occasional mistake. But on every other
day I make PLENTY of them!

Not too many people find out about my errors (unless I make them on
birding-aus). When a journalist, editor, newsreader, copywriter makes an error
in a story, thousands of people know about it immediately. OK - so their job is
to report the truth and to report accurately - but I ask: Have you never made a
mistake at work?

I don't have a problem with people mentioning errors in the media (I quite like
Media Watch myself!) but I don't think we should ridicule journos for an
occasional slip. It is probably a lot more productive to congratulate them for
doing the hard yards and getting stories out to the public quickly, or
investigating complex issues and explaining them in a way that makes sense.
