Greetings and thanks to all who responded to my post.
I had wondered if, as an ex-teacher, I should apologise for the standeard of
knowledge and critical thinking applied by so many of those on whom we rely
for our information. I decided against it on a number of reasons but
primarily because news is an entertainment industry at least as much as an
information one.
I am pleased with the media we have just like I am pleased with our
political system and its processes. They are so much better than many we see
around us but there is also so much room for improvement. I am grateful for
the journalists who do struggle with the "hard yards" rather than take the
easy options. It is a job so must have a lot of drudgery like every other.
There is the need to produce copy to deadlines. None of us, audience or
journalist, can be expected to be knowledgeable across all fields. This is
why confirming understandings with informants and cross checking sources is
important. Apart from sport and finance we seem to have few correspondents
who a knowledgeable in the field on which they are expected to report and
comment.
Like a couple of respondents I am really please to receive news in a timely
fashion without having to rely on an evening short wave radio transmission.
