the 4th fig-parrot

One observation suggested by this story is that unless you know the
background in detail it is impossible to make out what John Young is
claiming from most of the news reports, they are so badly written. You would
hope that the environment reporters were up to the difference between a
species and a sub-species (at least roughly), and their sub-editors messed
up the stories, but you have to wonder.

Makes you think how much of the other news we read is similarly distorted.

Fascinating suggestion, however, about a 4th taxon of fig-parrots in
Australia. We'll wait biting our nails for the outcome.

Hi All,

I've known about this species for a while after having been alerted to the
possibility of this species existing by a friend some time ago. At the
time
the photographer John Young apparently had some doubts as to whether or
not
the bird photographed was in fact a Coxen's Fig Parrot. Now we know that
it
is actually a new species. Sadly though it's another species which we must
be concerned about. The plight of this bird would almost certainly be like
that of the Coxen's Fig Parrot.

Yours Sincerely
