During the routine monthly water bird count at Walka Water Works this
morning by members of the Hunter Bird Observers Club a single female
Freckled Duck was observed.
We did not see the Blue-billed Duck that was present on Twitcherthon
weekend.
Other interesting birds seen included 2 Ballion's Crake and 3 Latham's
Snipe.
Birds with dependant young included Buff-banded Rail, Purple Swamphen,
Chestnut Teal and Pacific Black Duck
Walka Water Works is located just north of Maitland NSW. It is reached
by travelling along the New England Highway to Maitland Railway Station
and crossing to the north side of the railway. Travel for 3 kilometres
following the abundant brown tourist signs to the Water Works. It is a
masterpiece of nineteenth century civil engineering with a prominant
tall smokestack. It was originally constructed as the water supply for
Newcastle.
