Gooday all,
On Tuesday 31 October 2006 I was returning from Newlands Mine and observed a White-faced Heron settled on a Kangaroo carcass that was laying between the rail tracks. All I observed was the bird settled on the carcass in an upright stance as we came around the curve, then flying off low as the train approached. The following day at approx. the same time I again observed the White-faced Heron on the carcass. I was unable to provide any further detail as to what the bird was actually doing on the carcass but it has been suggested in the past that Herons may supplement their diet by feeding on Maggots, Flesh? I beleive the observation is noteworthy but still does not define what the bird is doing on the carcass and if indeed it is feeding.
Has any other observers had sightings of a similar nature.
Location of sighting. Near Pelican Creek on the approach to the Collinsville Yard Approx. 20 32S 147 50E Qld. Jon Wren
