For SLR.....I suggest the best mode to shoot most photography,
(including birds!) is in Aperture priority,(Unless you are a purist and
want to go full manual.) Particularly good for action telephoto shooting
(ie birds) as you can always get maximum light into the camera and thus
the fastest shutterspeed. The other way as per sugested before is
vibration reduction lenses (super expensive) or very fast lenses (again
gonna cost you lots of cash cash) like an f2.8 300mm or f4 600mm or
500mm. Mirror lenses are a lot lighter and shorter than telephoto so
easier to hang on to but they are usually fixed aperture f8 and manual
focus so you need nice sunlight and a deft focusing hand.
For cheaper lenses check ebay, You can get expensive lenes at up to half
price secondhand if you look around.
