I use a Finepix and have experienced similar probs, especially in lowlight conditions - I find setting on CF (continual focus) and using the "shake" setting (next to auto) gives reasonable results - I have published a few bird shots at www.cliftonbeach.net - all taken with the Finepix - overall the Finepix gives good value for money if your budget does not stretch to the top end brands.
