Hi Birders,
I was interested in what Peter Ewin had to say about the arrival dates of
the White-breasted Woodswallow in Mildura. It is too easy to suggest
"climate change" when we see something that we think is different (ie the
Emus at Deniliquin in a recnt posting). Had one monitored the arrival dates
every year since John Hobbs kept records, it might represent something if
there was a gradual change one way or the other. But if after 20 yars, the
birds is a few days earlier, you cannot jump in and say "climate change"
becausae you don't know what the trend is./ At timkes some birds don't
migrate at all (like some Reedwarblers and some Sacred Kingfishers and some
Rufous Whistlers) and then again, some just come earlier in some years,
Leaden Flycatchers and Channel-billed Cuckoos have a habit of doing that!!.
For the record though, the return of the WBWS to the Central Coast is
generally about 25 August (over 18 years). This year they returned 27/8!
