Spring in Mildura

I have recently moved to Mildura for work (still with DEC at Buronga but living south of the border).

A couple of things I have noted since arriving last week.

White-breasted Woodswallows - last year in Griffith they were far more common than I remember from last time I lived there (1991-95). However, looking at my records I hadn't seen any since May, when big flocks were gathering. As I hadn't realised they were migratory, so I didn't really think about their absence until I saw one at the new house in Mildura. Looked up HANZAB, and they record arrival dates for late August-early Spring. So the return around here was about Sat 9th of September. Hobbs (1961) reports regularly between 20-22 of September for 5 years, so maybe another example of early (warmer?) Spring.

Red Wattlebird - Seemed to be making a different call (initially I thought maybe Littles, but rejected once looked at the distribution - definitely not Yellow). Walked to the shops for milk, and saw at least two large begging chicks following adults around, so confirming some pretty early breeding.

Cheers,
Peter
