Hi Blake

Best wishes for your research. Hope this is some help:

"The Birds of Victoria and where to find them" by Roy Wheeler, Nelson,1979

Which is anticipated by "A Handlist of The Birds of Victoria", Victorian
Ornithological Research Group, 1967, which has distribution maps.

These were based on his work through the Bird Observers Club - of which he
was for many years an officer (secretary?) - and which published much of his
material in its newsletter.

(Wheeler is fascinating, a Melbourne - Victoria - postman who was not always
welcome in posh ornithological circles but became President of the RAOU and
was one of the first to alert Australians to the local impacts of "Silent
Spring")

Is "A Guide to Bird-Watching in Europe" edited by James Ferguson-Lees,
Quentin Hockliffee & Ko Zweeres, The Bodley Head, 1975, wider ranging than
Gooders book?

I wonder which was the first all Australian "Where to find Birds in
Australia" (the title of Bransburg's book 1987). The Serventys' Sea-Bird
book is 1971.

As for checklists with annotations on records, R.H. Green published the
first edition of "Birds of Tasmania" in 1959.

Is that the earliest published for Australian States ?

I suspect that State publications preceded all-Australia ones but your
reference for Mexico (1955) is amazingly early for coverage of a whole
country!
