Hello from Canada;
I am researching an article on the history and future of Bird Finding
and Birding Guides, and while I have managed to obtain a fairly
comprehensive listing of the earliest such books for the United
States, Canada, the U.K., and Europe, I have very little knowledge
for Australia and surrounding countries. The earliest I have found is:
Birds and Where to Watch Them in New South Wales by Roy Wheeler, 1987
I am sure there must be earlier ones. For your reference here are
the earliest for other countries or regions:
A Guide to Bird Finding East of the Mississippi by Olin Sewall
Pettingill, 1951 (U.S.A.)
Finding Birds in Mexico by Ernest Edwards, 1955
Where to Watch Birds by John Gooders, 1967 (United Kingdom)
Where to Find the Birds in Nova Scotia, by the Nova Scotia Bird
Society, 1968 (Canada)
"Fagellokaler i Sverige" (Birding Sites in Sweden), Swedish Society
for Nature Conservation, 1972
Where to Watch Birds in Europe by John Gooders, 1974
Can anyone assist me with the names and details of similarly early
titles from Australia and environs?
All the best, and good birding,
