Today (27/8/06) I enjoyed a good morning's birding around the
Kurrajong-Richmond area (approx. 50-60km NW of Sydney CBD).

As I drove along Comleroy Rd (near Kurrajong), I saw 2 Wedge-tailed
Eagle fly only a few meters above the ground and being heavily mobbed by
Australian Ravens. I quickly pulled over but by the time I fiddled
around to get my camera ready they were quickly gone.

Further along this road towards Wheeny Creek on the edge of the Wollemi
NP, I saw 2 Spotted Quail-thrush (great views of the male) and also saw
a nice male Rose Robin, several Noisy Friarbirds and Yellow-tufted
Honeyeaters, Buff-rumped Thornbills and heard Scarlet Honeyeater.

Around Kurrajong, I saw a couple of photogenic Common Bronzewings, a few
Satin Bowerbirds and also heard both Scarlet Honeyeaters and
Olive-backed Oriole.

A look around Richmond/Windsor turf farms for an hour or so yielded a
pair of Banded Lapwings (at there favourite spot on the Windsor end of
Cornwallis Rd where I have seen 80 on one occasion in 1994!), a nice
adult pair of White-bellied Sea-eagles (not too high and displaying
nicely), a pair of Swamp Harriers chasing the Starlings, a group of
Cattle Egrets (all non-breeding plumage), both a Yellow-billed and a
Royal Spoonbill Feeding together, only one pair of Australasian
Shovelers, 38 Pink-eared Ducks together on a small dam, several Fairy
Martins, singing Reed Warblers, a flock of 20 Chestnut-breasted
Mannikins with a male Zebra Finch amongst them and

Along the Hawkesbury River there was also an Azure Kingfisher and
another male Swamp Harrier perched.

There appeared to be no signs of Songlarks, Trillers, Pallid Cuckoos or
any migratory waders yet in this part of the Hawkesbury.
