3 of us (Hewishes from Bacchus Marsh and myself), and Bob Inglis and his
brother saw the GHL on Sunday evening. We had searched for some time becoming
increasingly gloomy when it flew in from the west just before sunset and landed
in the puddles between the silo and the railway line. (In flight the white wing
patches and white rump are very striking.) It puddled in the water but we did
not see it catch and eat anything. It also walked around on the shore of the
ponds where in the fading light it was quite hard to see being well camouflaged.

We returned aboiut 7.30 this morning when it was in the drain on the other side
of the road from the silos - where Jenny Holcombe says she usually sees it as
she drives to work at about 8.30. It flew from there to the same drain as on
the evening before, then flew up from there apparently flying west and
vanished. Monday being a working day there were trucks driving into the silos
and other activity around the site, so birdwatchers (us) were not the only
disturbance. We also saw a Hobby and a Black Falcon - Jenny Holcombe says there
is a pair of Black Falcons - and all this was keeping the hundreds of Cockatiel
and Galahs in a nervous state.

Apart from its foot the GHL looked OK. If you do not see it when you arrive, do
not panic, wait until sunset.

Both Jenny and the servo proprietor are keeping tabs on the bird, both are
happy to help and keen to hear about your observations.
