Sure, a copy of HANZAB in this format would be great. I am not convinced that
much time needs to be spent producing a fully stand-alone piece of integrated
audio-visual software - the CDs of bird calls are great and gradually improve
and are simple to change to MP3. I like the versatility of keeping a good range
on the device then dropping other choice species on for different trips. The
plates from a guide such as HANZAB though could be easily incorporated. I'd
love to have the ability to user-define links to audio data files. For example,
when one first accesses a call, you define the location and then it remains the
default. This way you could update calls as new recordings come available. As
for the plates, there is a massive amount of memory taken up with blank parts
of the existing plates. All you'd need is a simple image with the birds lined
up above one another. This would save loads of space and I suspect, the whole
thing could be condensed to very little.
But let's not run before we can walk. When are we going to see a HANZAB
fieldguide full stop? I would be lost without it since field notes I have on
potentially difficult species such as Red Goshawk and Buff-breasted Buttonquail
are better than all the existing fieldguides. If it wasn't for HANZAB I don't
know where I would go for identification support except perhaps a trip to the
museum to look at skins (which is what I had to do for BBBQ before I got
HANZAB).
