Anyone who keeps chooks should be familiar with this apparent gender change
thing. Old hens will grow spurs and longer tail feathers and start crowing,
especially if there is no rooster around. We even have one that regularly
mounts other, subordinate, hens and is to all appearances copulating with
them.
For Colin and Mick, I can say that I regularly saw Pheasant Coucals over the
road from my old property near Cooranbong, although more often in Summer
than Winter. I got the impression that they didn't migrate, just went
quieter and less obvious in Winter. This was in the property known as
Billangrove, adjoining Awaba State Forest, sold off to a coal mining
company. Anybody know what is happening to that property now that the coal
mine application has been withdrawn? It was a great place for birding.
