Thanks to all those who replied to my post and explained how this 
gender-changing is a possibility.
To relate it all to birding, I suppose that in those odd cases where a bird's 
plumage or appearance doesn't quite fit the description for 
male/female/immature/etc, there is a (very remote) possibility that the bird in 
question has an illness affecting its hormones.
A thought to tuck away in the back of your mind!
