Hi everyone,

Relying on Field Guides to give accurate maps of distribution of birds is fraught with difficulties. All field guides have some problems and Morecombe's maps for NSW and probably eastern Australia are often wrong as I have previously pointed out. He may be OK in the west but not in SE Aust.

HANZAB & New Atlas have it right. HANZAB says (as did MM&H!)
"Mainly confined to N, from Northern Tableands to ne Upper Western Regions, especially on the North West Slopes and Plains, W to Mungindi; more sparsely scattered further W, in Central-west Plains and ne Upper Western Regions mainly W to Narran Lake, with isolated records near Brewarrina and Bourke. Occur S to line joining Bourke, Narrabri and Bingara, but isolated records further S in Warrumbungle NP and Gunnedah. E of Great Divide, sometimes in Northern Rivers District, rarely south to the McPherson Range, and Richmond R Districts, though avairy escapes said to have been recorded at numerous locations in the Northern Rivers District.

The New Atlas 1998-2002 shows a similar distribution.

An on another matter, It would not be unexpected that Spotted Nightjars occurred at Grenfell, there are previous records as far east as Capertee Valley and Cooyal east of Mudgee.
