Congratulations Brett on an excellent report and both of you on such good
observation and doing all the right and sensible things so promptly.
I felt very sorry when I read people's emails saying their rarity reports
had been rubbished. No-one should ever be hesitant at reporting what may or
may not be a rarity. Even if you are inexperienced, you have as good a
chance as anyone of seeing something special. In fact you may well have a
better chance as you will not have fixed preconceptions about what is likely
to be where. As the author of several famous mistakes (I have a 100% failure
rate with BARC), I now know to write a description on the spot and to get a
competent witness fast. How fortunate to have a camera handy!
For every mean person who rubbishes what they think are improbable reports,
there are dozens of bird people who are only too happy to help beginners,
and as many who are delighted when your improbable bird turns out to be
true.
