Debbie, some more information for you.

I notice some golf associations are trying to address the issue of water
use and other 'problems' with golf courses.

The Victorian Golf Association has some useful links on this issue e.g.
Sustainable water for golf -
http://www.golfvic.org.au/dir127/VGAsite.nsf/pages/services_water

and

Society of Australian Golf Course Architects (SAGCA) -
http://www.sagca.org.au/environment.asp

Golf Australia (special projects, various reports) -
http://www.golfaustralia.org.au/About_Reports_The_Environment.htm

cheers, Martin
